Awakening features a hand roll held by an unseen entity, with two little Oni heads nestled amongst cucumber, crab, avocado, rice, and seaweed. One sleeps while the other awakens, while an eye on the hand roll sheds a single tear. I wanted this piece to evoke a sense of spirituality and etherealness. Perhaps the elegant hand belongs to a goddess, bestowing sentience and free will upon this tiny world. But with awareness comes the knowledge of suffering, both personal and universal. It is a duality, a blessing and a curse. Perhaps the tear represents this newfound knowledge... an Awakening.
